About
I have studied and worked at a range of universities in Europe, Asia and Australia, conducted research in the UK, Japan, Malaysia and Australia and am working on a future project that will involve a comparative study of multiculturalism in the Asia-Pacific region. My undergraduate training was interdisciplinary ranging from social anthropology, politics, Islamic studies to international relations. My postgraduate work has focused on Malaysia and identity politics, with an emphasis on the role of Islam. My major theoretical underpinnings have been notions of cosmopolitanism, interculturalism and what I term Islamicity. My work is at the nexus of political anthropology, the sociology of religion and the philosophy of being.
