About

The broad issue that I am interested in is this:  what is the impact of innovation on economic growth?  I approach this from the perspective of evolutionary economics, which views the economy as an evolving complex system.  Analytically, this leads to viewing the economy as a network, and using various forms of network analysis.  My current research program is built around the application of complex network analysis to the study of innovation at the levels of the firm, region, sector and nation.

I am working on several research projects addressing this issue including: the evolution of national innovation systems with Jason Potts and Mark Dodgson; networks as drivers of Penrosian firm growth with Neil Kay (Strathclyde University); a study of how intra-firm network structures influence innovation outcomes in project-based firms with John Steen and Mark Dodgson (funded starting in 2009 by an ARC Discovery Grant).

This research program is also being extended through the work of the six RHD students that I am supervising.  All of them are doing complex network research addressing various issues that are closely related to these research projects.  Together with John Steen, we form the UQBS Network Research Group.
